Shoulder Injuries: How can an Osteopath help?
Our shoulders are one of the most used joints in our body, with every 2 in 3 people in Australia experiencing shoulder pain in their lifetime. Shoulder injuries can present in many ways, often through direct injuries (often sports related) to chronic conditions developing over time. But what can an Osteopath do to help with shoulder pain?
Osteopaths are trained to diagnose and treat shoulder pain. We will perform a thorough history (understand how the injury occurred), physical examination and then determine the best course of treatment and management for you. At times, referrals may be recommended to assess your pain/injury in further detail, ensuring that all possible causes of your pain are evaluated.
Osteopathic treatment and management for shoulder injuries include:
· Hands-on manual therapy techniques – Osteopaths use a variety of manual therapy techniques to assist your shoulder recover from its injury, promoting muscular and joint healing and restoring range of motion where possible.
· Prescribed exercises - Once physical assessment and treatment has been done, your osteopath may prescribe exercises and stretches to target stiff joints, tight muscles, and weakened areas.
· Pain relief medication – At times (particularly over the short-term), your osteopath may recommend a short-course of anti-inflammatory or pain relief medication to assist you.
· Avoiding aggravation – Avoiding overuse and repetitive movements can be a great way to allow your body to have the rest it needs. Our Osteopaths will be able to educate you on these movements and how to best recover!
